Overview
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that commonly affects multiple joints simultaneously, often starting in the foot and ankle. This condition typically manifests symmetrically on both sides of the body, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness in the affected joints. The foot and ankle, comprising 28 bones and over 30 joints, play a crucial role in providing support, movement, and shock absorption. Arthritis in these joints can significantly impair daily activities, particularly if symptoms are severe.
Types of Arthritis & Symptoms
The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, characterized by joint degeneration due to wear and tear. Risk factors for osteoarthritis include advanced age, obesity, high levels of physical activity, and previous joint trauma. In contrast, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that frequently targets the foot and ankle, leading to symptoms such as pain with movement, swelling, difficulty walking, and tenderness over the affected joint. Rheumatoid arthritis often presents symmetrically on both sides of the body.
Surgical Options
In severe cases where symptoms significantly impact daily activities, surgical intervention may be recommended. Arthroscopic debridement, arthrodesis, and joint arthroplasty are among the surgical options available. Arthroscopic debridement involves removing loose cartilage, inflamed synovial tissue, and bone spurs to alleviate pain. Arthrodesis involves complete joint fusion with hardware, while joint arthroplasty replaces the affected joint with prosthetics. Surgery is typically reserved for more severe cases due to its effectiveness in relieving pain and improving function.

Struggling With Arthritis of the Foot & Ankle?
Diagnosis & Treatment Options
Doctors typically use X-rays to visualize affected joints and confirm the diagnosis of arthritis, looking for joint space narrowing and bone spurs. Blood tests may also be necessary to confirm rheumatoid arthritis. While there is no cure for arthritis, several treatment options can help manage symptoms. Lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often used as first-line therapies. Supportive braces may also provide relief.
