Overview
A complete tear of the Achilles tendon, which extends down the back of the leg to the heel, is a serious injury involving the body's largest tendon. Essential for walking, running, and jumping, this tendon, despite its robustness, can suffer partial tears or ruptures due to excessive stress, such as from forceful jumping, sudden accelerations or decelerations, or tripping and falling.
Causes & Risk Factors
Achilles tendon ruptures are more likely to occur in:
- Infrequent exercisers, often called "weekend warriors"
- Individuals taking medications that weaken tendons, such as certain steroids and antibiotics
- Those with pre-existing Achilles tendinitis
Treatment & Recovery
Prompt surgical repair is often necessary for optimal healing and functionality. Non-surgical treatments may be considered if the tear is partial or if the patient is not a suitable candidate for surgery. Physical therapy plays a crucial role in the recovery process, regardless of the treatment method, helping to restore full function and strength.

Symptoms & Diagnosis
A rupture is typically marked by a sudden snap or "pop" in the back of the ankle, followed by immediate pain, swelling, and difficulty walking. Though usually evident, an MRI may be used to determine the severity of the tear.
